The studio
Eight people in Palma. Architects, quantity surveyors and a site team that has been with us for more than a decade.
Marès was founded in 2007 to do one thing well: work on old Mallorcan houses without turning them into a tourist version of themselves. New build followed, because the same clients who trusted us with a possessió eventually bought a plot.
We work to an uncomfortable but useful principle: if we cannot build it ourselves, we do not draw it. Having our own building company forces us to design with real prices, real timescales and the trades that actually exist on the island. It also means that when something goes wrong, there is nobody to point at.
The studio works in Spanish, Catalan, English and German. That is not a marketing detail: most of our construction decisions are made in writing with clients two thousand kilometres away, and precision of language is part of quality control.
01 How we decide
The old is read, not imitated
What we add is distinguishable from what was there. We never fake aged stone or a false beam.
Passive before mechanical
Orientation, thermal mass, shade and cross ventilation first. The machine comes last, not first.
Reversible wherever possible
Services stay accessible, additions can be removed. In a hundred years someone will be grateful it could be undone.
The budget is part of the design
A project that cannot be paid for is not a project, it is a drawing. We cost from the concept stage.
